Offertories and romeria pilgrimages
Also remarkable in the framework of Salamanca popular festivities are the offertories and the romerias, a unique occasion to get to know and share the religious passion of the people. Offertories are abundant in the mountain villages during the summer, when their narrow streets are adorned with embroideries.
Rustic clothing and bullfighting are the centre of the offertories of Mogarraz and San Martín del Castañar, among other villages. In La Alberca, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption) makes a great feast out of the offertory. The next day, the sacramental act of La Loa is played in the village. Finally, innumerable offertories can be found in many other villages, such as Cepeda, Sotoserrano, Casas del Conde or El Cabaco.
More austere are the romerias, pilgrimages extending over the Salamanca fields and pastures and which reflect the authentic purity of profound religious sentiment.
At the arrival of the spring, the village of Horcajo Medianero hosts the romeria of Nuestra Señora de Valdejimena. On the same date, the great festivity of the land and bull breeders takes place in the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Cueto in Matilla de los Caños. Finally, several days later, on the 18th of June, the Christ of Cabrera in Las Veguillas is a centre of pilgrimage all over the province.
