Boundary Fortifications

In the west, near the boundary with Portugal, there are different fortifications, due to the wars and fighting that took place throughout the history. Some of them played a very important role during the Napoleonic Wars.

They are medieval constructions reinforced in the 17th and 18th centuries following the bastion fortresses model. If we look at them from above, their star shape, with moats and ravelins really grab our attention.

Cathedral Diocesan Museum

The richest and most complete museum in Ciudad Rodrigo is located in a stunning setting: the Cathedral. It has been recently created and it houses important archeological collections, among which we can point out some prehistoric relics found in the area, some vestiges of its Romanesque past (including some numismatic and funerary items) and some architectural remains from the different building stages of the Cathedral.

Interpretation Centre of the Historic Paths

This centre, located in Calzada de Valdunciel (near the capital city), shows the historic paths, such as the famous Via de la Plata and the big transhumant cattle routes.

Throughout history cattle and armies used to walk through the province of Salamanca going across important paths such as the Via de la Plata or the Mesta Royal cattle routes. Thousands and thousands of farmers, travelers and traders used to walk along these paths; the history of these people is described on the interpretative panels.

Interpretation Room, “Castles and Walls in the West of Castile and Leon”

The castle houses on the last floor, an interpretation room about the medieval fortifications on the old border between the kingdoms of Leon and Castile.

Castile and Leon is a land of Castles, especially the western part of the region, where there used to be three borders during many centuries; the border which was created under the Andalusi power; another one created when Portugal was born and the third one, the border which divided the old kingdoms of Leon and Castile.

“Angel Mateos” Concrete Museum

Is this a building or a sculpture?. The first thing that calls our attention about this museum is the strong appearance of the building. They are concrete blocks which are joined together to house the works of art by a great sculptor. Angel Mateos has been an avant-garde artist, one of the most personal voices in the last third of the 20th century.

Marina Gomez Museum

This small exhibition place gathers the works by Marina Gomez, a painter and sculptor who was born in Salamanca but lives in Madrid; the museum also shows works by other artists from Alaraz and the province of Salamanca.

It is a dynamic artistic centre, which organizes a consolidated painting contest for adults and children every year. Its activity is focused on the summer months.

Morille Art Cemetery

The Art Museum in Morille was born in 2005 as a proposal of the artists Domingo Sanchez Blanco and the deceased Javier Utray.

The main objective of this original idea is to bury some valuable pieces from the artistic point of view; these items are directly related to the avant-garde art field. It is important to understand that the process of the burial is not less important than the burial itself.

Los Arapiles

Los Arapiles, two hills and a wide plain, are situated 8 km to the south of Salamanca city. These three places have been declared Historical Site. On the 22nd July, 1812 one of the most important battles of the Peninsular War took place there, the battle of Salamanca.

The isolated army – English, Portuguese, German and Spanish soldiers – commanded by the Duke of Wellington defeated the French army commanded by Marmont Marshal. More than 100.000 soldiers of both sides took part in the fighting.

Ruta de la Plata
